I had put the dog to bed before the child who was still bouncing a yellow balloon from hand to hand. They had chased each other from one room to another – the child, the dog and the balloon. The dog quickly tired of the game, and the child eventually abandoned the balloon somewhere between the kitchen bench and a drawer full of cooking pots.
It was still there the following morning, looking somewhat deflated and ignored. It reminded me of the quince I had forgotten to buy the day before, so I left it where it was while I brewed a pot of coffee and made toast for the child. I would make the membrillo another day.
The sun had barely broken through the shutters when the dog – who had already eaten and been out for a quick jaunt in the garden – snuck back into bed for a nap. The child who had found the balloon, sat quietly under a blanket bouncing it from hand to hand. So poured myself a second cup of coffee in celebration of the quiet chill of this wintry morning.

Love this piece, Jane. Can't go wrong with a second cup of coffee!
Some great imagery in there. Like the 3 main characters: the balloon, the dog, and the child.
